Eco building and design Courses & Workshops

Certificate in Ecological Building and Design - This correspondence course covers the basic concepts of healthier and more sustainable building and design. It is suitable as a complement to existing careers in building and design, or for those who want to build their own Eco Home.

Design Your Own Eco Home Workshop - This is an intensive two and a half day weekend workshop for those wanting to be more involved in the design and decision making required for their new Eco Home. Theory and practical design sessions to help develop a concept design for your new home.

Eco Building Workshop - This is a one day weekend workshop.  Participants will gain an understanding of sustainable building and therefore be in a position to help meet the growing demand for healthier and more sustainable homes and buildings


Certificate in Ecological Building and Design (NZQA Approved Version)

This Online course is for people interested in learning about the design and construction of buildings that are healthier and more sustainable. Topics include: assessing buildings; bio harmonic design and permaculture; co-housing; earth and strawbale building, other natural building materials; passive solar design and renewable energy systems; rainwater harvesting, water conservation, compost toilets and alternative wastewater systems. The course is being run in conjunction with Aoraki Polytechnic.

It is designed to challenge and change the way we live and work in the world, nurturing a respect for living in harmony with the natural environment. The course is based on the original German IBO Correspondence Course but designed to meet the needs of New Zealand students.

Building Biology and Ecology Institute

The course consists of 5 Modules (approximately 80hrs each) :

Module 1: Principles of Ecological Building and Design

Module 2: Building and Site Design

Module 3: Materials and Construction

Module 4: Energy and Alternative Energy

Module 5: Water and Wastewater

Course Costs - NZ$220 per Module for NZ and Australian permanent residents residing in NZ, NZ$580 per Module for international students. Some textbooks to be purchased.

Design Your Own Eco Home Workshop

Workshop Summary Session

This intensive weekend workshop was originally developed for those wanting to design their own Eco Home. Now after 11 years of delivering the workshops many others also attend.  The workshop is a must for anyone seeking a good grounding in latest residential eco building ideas.

If your an architect, designer, builder, council building inspector, planner, real estate agent or layperson this workshop will be a very positive way to spendthe weekend!

Over the weekend theory is balanced with practical sessions. By the Sunday night those who attended with design projects will have concept sketch plans of their homes.

Led by architect and BBE Director Alex Greig, you will learn about what is involved in designing an Eco Home and the process involved in building one.
